2026 Lexus ES Debuts Built-In Drive Recorder, Configurable Home Screen Widgets, and Faster On-Device

The 2026 Lexus ES marks the debut of the latest generation of Lexus Interface — the multimedia and connectivity system that powers every ES, from the 350h hybrid to the 350e and 500e BEV models. Announced earlier this month, this new generation of Lexus Interface is not a software update to the previous system. It arrives on a redesigned platform with increased on-device computing power, a new home screen layout built around customizable widgets, and an on-device voice assistant that no longer requires a network connection to respond to basic commands.

For buyers evaluating the ES lineup, the technology inside matters as much as the powertrain specs. The 14-inch touchscreen is standard on every 2026 ES grade, but the software running on it is genuinely different from what came before. Here is what is new.

Configurable Home Screen and Quick Control Menu

The most visible change in the new Lexus Interface is the configurable home screen. Rather than a fixed layout, the home screen now works on a widget system. Guests can choose from individual widgets covering navigation, drive mode, audio, connected smart device status, and weather — grouping them in combinations of two or three based on personal preference. The result is a screen layout that reflects how the driver actually uses the vehicle rather than what Lexus decided in advance.

A Quick Control Menu sits in the upper right corner of the touchscreen and is accessible at any time, regardless of which screen is active. It provides one-tap access to Bluetooth settings, screen brightness, light/dark mode switching, and shortcuts to Advanced Driver Assistance System settings. For frequent adjustments that previously required multiple menu steps, the Quick Control Menu shortens the path considerably.

The new interface also supports 64-colour ambient interior illumination on the 2026 ES, adjustable through the touchscreen.

On-Device Voice Assistant: Faster, Offline-Capable

The Lexus Voice Assistant in the previous generation depended on a network connection for many functions. The 2026 system moves to an on-device embedded solution, meaning the assistant's core functions — adjusting audio volume, changing climate control settings, checking estimated trip range, getting the time, basic arithmetic, and navigating to menu pages — operate without a network connection and respond faster than before.

Activation works through "Hey Lexus," "Hi Lexus," or "Okay Lexus." For Guests unsure how to use a feature, the assistant can provide direct guidance. Asking "Hey Lexus, how do I connect my phone?" takes the system directly to the Bluetooth pairing screen rather than returning a description. The system also now offers a choice of two voice types (male and female), a first for Lexus Interface.

Drive Recorder: Standard Dashcam Functionality Built In

Drive Recorder debuts as a standard feature on every 2026 Lexus ES — and it is designed to be invisible in the cabin. Rather than requiring a separate camera mounted to the windscreen, Drive Recorder uses the vehicle's existing exterior cameras to record. There is no cable, no suction cup, and no obstruction to visibility.

The system records continuously in one-minute looping clips, storing up to 90 clips onboard along with speed and location data for each segment. Guests can also manually save up to four clips at any time. Incident recordings — up to five, triggered automatically by the G-sensor when the vehicle experiences impact, hard braking, or airbag deployment — are saved separately. All recordings can be played back on the head unit or downloaded to a USB drive. The sensitivity of the incident-recording trigger is adjustable.

For BEV models (ES 350e and ES 500e), the Lexus Interface also includes EV Charge Management tools — including an EV Range Map that calculates routing based on current battery level, identifies charging stations along the route, and estimates battery percentage at each stop and the final destination.

Full-Screen Navigation on the Multi-Information Display

Navigation has been brought directly into the multi-information display (MID) behind the steering wheel. For the first time in Lexus Interface, native turn-by-turn directions appear full screen in the MID — maps and directional prompts visible without looking away from the road ahead. This integration runs alongside the 14-inch touchscreen, which continues to serve as the primary interaction point.

Cloud-based navigation with real-time traffic updates, 24/7 live destination assistance, and alternate route suggestions requires an active Drive Connect trial or subscription.
