2021 Lexus RX vs. 2021 Audi Q5: Made Here, Just for You

Made in Canada, the 2021 Lexus RX is a skillfully-crafted luxury vehicle with advanced powertrains and technology. The unique design of the RX is recognized worldwide, and the lineup is more accessible than its luxury crossover competitors. Here, we compare the latest RX to the 2021 BMW X5.

The 2021 Lexus RX is the price leader

The RX series is an evolution of a long history of luxury vehicles from Lexus. Despite this, the price range of the lineup is something many don't expect. The RX 350 has the most appealing starting MSRP in this comparison at $56,650. Its hybrid version, the RX 450h, begins at $59,400. In comparison, the BMW xDrive40i has an MSRP of $80,452. The BMW xDrive45e starts at just over $86,000 and the M50i at just under $96,000.

The remaining Lexus RX models, the 350 L and 450h L, have respective MSRPs of $59,700 and $76,700. No matter the differences between the vehicles, such a gap in sticker prices place the X5 in a peculiar spot.

The 2021 Lexus RX extends options

The 2021 RX features two main powertrains that range from all-gas to hybrid power. The RX 350 and 350 L include a 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine that outputs 295 horsepower in the RX 350 and 290 horsepower in the 350 L. The RX 450h and 450 L feature the Lexus Hybrid Drive system that combines the 3.5-litre engine with an electric motor. The system generates 308 net horsepower.

The X5's powertrains generate more power than their Lexus counterparts, but the price per horsepower is quite enormous.

The RX series is more efficient than the X5 in several comparisons. The RX 350 has the best highway mileage than any petrol vehicle in this comparison, consuming just 9.0 L/100 km. The RX 450h has the best overall mileage (by far) with a rating of 7.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway. The X5's 'hybrid' falls behind at 12.2/10.6 L/100 km.

The RX features two available lengths that offer more versatility, with the 'L' models extended to fit a third row. The X5 does not offer a third row or alternative body length.
